Observed around the world on different days of the year, Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June in the United States and several other countries. Father’s Day arose in the United States as a natural complement to Mother’s Day. Before either of the holidays were popularized, however, the first official observance of Father’s Day was held in Fairmont, West Virginia as a memorial service for several men and fathers lost in a nearby mining accident just two months after the first Mother’s Day celebration took place in Grafton, West Virginia. The notion of Father’s Day did not catch on, until two years later, when official Father’s Day sermons were given across the city of Spokane, Washington in honor of fathers.

Although American citizens began to celebrate the holiday annually, government officials were wary to recognize the day, in fear of over-commercialization. Following a 1966 presidential proclamation issued by Lyndon B. Johnson, President Richard Nixon signed the holiday into law in 1972. Celebrant’s worldwide honor fathers and fatherhood with special meals, dad-friendly activities, gift giving, small gatherings, and large celebrations on Father’s Day.
