Ten years ago, Colleen Paige began promoting National Puppy Day as a way to encourage people to adopt puppies (and older dogs) from shelters instead of purchasing them from for-profit breeders. Citing the overpopulation problem in the United States, and the sheer number of dogs being surrendered to rescue shelters, Ms. Paige began the grassroots effort which became a social media phenomenon and is recognized worldwide.

Did You Know? The numbers are staggering. Each year, nearly 4 million dogs are surrendered to shelters, and only 35% of them will ever be rehomed. Sadly, approximately 1.4 million of those dogs will be euthanized. Even with so many “unwanted” animals, there are 70,000 new puppies born annually. 

National Puppy Day honors those who work tirelessly to rescue and rehome dogs who have been abandoned or abused. They will attest to the very loving nature of these animals, dispelling the myth that shelter animals were given up because they had behavioral issues. In fact, over 90% of animals find themselves in rescue shelters through no fault of their own. Puppies born in shelters have a higher rate of adoption, but organizers of National Puppy Day are intent on convincing everyone who is in the market for a new puppy to bypass the stores and breeders adopt a shelter puppy who needs a home.
